Smithway Asphalt was founded in 1980 by J. D. Smith, primarily as a paving, concrete, and curbing company. Since that time Smithway Asphalt has expanded into a full-service paving contractor serving residential, commercial and industrial customers throughout middle Tennessee.

Smithway Asphalt operates daily in 6 teams, approximately 40 employees, armed with specifications, drawings, and the site location. Each team is in full communication with the base, by 2-way radio & cellular telephones, should any problems or questions arise. These teams operate autonomously, according to the specifications set forth by the Engineers & Estimators. Each team has an experienced team leader who is equipped to make on-site decisions.
